With the current heatwave, it’s not just humans who need to cool down! Our furry friends can also feel the heat, so why not treat them to a refreshing and healthy dog-friendly ice lolly? These treats are simple to make and are perfect for keeping your dog happy and hydrated, offering a welcome break from the summer sun. The best part is, you can whip up a batch using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

Why Your Dog Will Love These Treats

These dog-friendly ice lollies aren’t just a fun way to cool down; they also offer several health benefits. The frozen consistency can help soothe gums for teething puppies, and they provide an excellent way to keep your dog hydrated during hot weather. By using natural, dog-safe ingredients like peanut butter and fruit, you can avoid the sugars and artificial additives found in many shop-bought treats. Plus, the mental stimulation of licking and working at the lolly can keep them occupied and happy.

Ingredients & Method

You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup of dog-friendly peanut butter (check the label to ensure it does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs)
  • 2 cups of water or dog-friendly broth
  • A few dog biscuits or treats for the ‘stick’
  • An ice lolly mould or ice cube tray

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the peanut butter and water/broth together until you have a smooth, consistent liquid. Ensure there are no lumps of peanut butter remaining.
  2. Carefully pour the mixture into your chosen ice lolly moulds or ice cube tray, filling each one to the top.
  3. Place a dog biscuit or a small, hard treat into each mould. This will serve as a handle for your dog. For a neater finish, you can carefully push it down so it stands upright.
  4. Transfer the tray to the freezer and allow it to freeze for at least 4 hours, or until the treats are completely solid.
  5. Once frozen, run the outside of the mould under warm water for a few seconds to easily remove the lollies. Serve one to your very good boy or girl and watch them enjoy their cool treat!

Top Tip: You can easily customise these treats! Try substituting some of the water with mashed banana, pureed blueberries, or a tablespoon of plain, unsweetened yoghurt for different flavours and textures. Always ensure any ingredients you use are safe for dogs.

Safety First: Always supervise your dog while they enjoy these treats to prevent any choking hazards. These lollies are intended to be a fun supplement to their diet, not a meal replacement. If you have any concerns about your dog’s diet, please consult with your veterinarian.
